Production Language of an Artist Is Built From Repeating Decisions. What sounds can be left rough? How much space exists around the drums? When do you feel the bass more than hear it? How long does a loop continue before a single shift alters the direction of the entire track? For Turntable Kachina, those decisions create music that feels physical, expansive and grounded. Instrumental hip hop, ambient music, house, funk and cinematic electronics can all appear in the lexicon; however, they are treated as raw material rather than as rigid genres.

Dusty Drums

The music does not reproduce those settings literally. The music carries their dimensions. Reverb can provide a horizon behind the drums. A distant texture can indicate scale without providing a melodic structure. Silence can separate two sounds far better than another layer positioned between them. Open sky in production terminology is allowing a track to breathe.
The Patience of Ambient Music
Ambient influence does not necessitate removing rhythm. Ambient influence can manifest itself through gradual development of sound, how atmosphere surrounds a beat or how repeated textures modify the emotional atmosphere without indicating so explicitly. Turntable Kachina utilizes ambient space to broaden rhythmic music rather than escape from it. A drone can enhance the sensation of a kick being more securely grounded. Cinematic music permits tension to build and subside through pacing as opposed to solely through volume. Turntable Kachina employs cinematic considerations in producing beat-driven music. A track can initiate with a tight, limited texture before gradually expanding into a broader environment. Drums can appear as a change in physical scale.
